New beginnings

Plato once said, “The beginning is the most important part of the work.”

I‘ve struggled giving this blog a ‘beginning’ that it deserves. Over the years, false starts litter the archives, reminders of my inability of commit.

So I’ve decided to start afresh. In some ways.

The blog’s still called in your basement. It’s been ten years since I first coined this name for my first WordPress blog, and I’ve come a long way as a writer. I now write for a living as an advertising copywriter, and have dipped my toes into content writing as well as design writing. I would have never guessed that I’d have interviewed Tom Dixon (by proxy), KIGI, and teamLab before I turned 30.

in your basement is back, but it’s no longer a single-minded blog about otaku culture. This is where I collect my thoughts on design in Singapore and Japan, as well as delve deeper into how we interact with modern technology and pop culture. These have always been pet topics of mine, and I’m hoping to work my writing chops a little harder in the new year. There are a couple of things I want to accomplish in the next few years, and hopefully this blog will set me on the right track. More on that in a future post.

Everything’s pretty much a work in progress, much like how life is! I hope you’ll stick around though.

So hello world, and welcome back to in your basement.
